lighting Cesendeli
- Giuseppe Boerio’s dictionary of Venetian dialect first published in 1829 uses the word Cesendeli to describe the city’s wall hung lamps, the word also attributed to the Firefly Beetle. Wall hung Cesendeli were introduced in the mid 12th C by decree of the Doge, small oil lamps and candles which illuminated Venice’s Campi & Calli (squares & narrow streets ) preventing night time criminality.
